Thunderbird Circuit Race is the official season opener for the BC road racing calendar. While Glen Valley is about wind and Murchie is about punchy climbs, Thunderbird is often the "shakedown" race where everyone tests their winter legs for the first time.
Location: Staging at Thunderbird Show Park - 6975 248th St, Langley, BC
Organizer: Local Ride Racing.
🚴 The Course: "The Square"
Thunderbird is a true circuit race. Very simple, very fast, and held on a large rectangular loop (approx. 10 km).
Terrain: It is mostly flat and looks easy on paper, but because the roads are wide and the turns are mostly 90-degree rights, the speeds are incredibly high.
The Wind: Since it’s held around the open fields of the equestrian park, there is almost zero cover. If there’s a breeze, the "back stretch" usually turns into a brutal crosswind section where the pack will "gutter" (line up diagonally to hide from the wind).
The Finish: Usually a long, slightly false-flat drag. Because it’s so wide, the sprints are often chaotic and involve the whole width of the road.
